how to setup the TP-Link RE650 AC2600 WiFi extender / repeater

First of all…we speak about a WiFi extender here. The TP-Link RE650 AC2600 – so dont expect a special unboxing video or and special features.
It pushed the WiFi signal with 2,4Ghz or 5Ghz forward and extends the rage. Thats why we call it a WiFi range extender. Surprise.

First you need to unpack it. Another suprise. Then connect it to a power outlet. Another sur…okay…you got it šŸ˜‰
Now there are two “Quick setup guides”. A small multilingual booklet and a A4 english one.

The funny thing here…the small one is crap as it dont explains both (important!) options you have and might need.
It only shows the easy way if everything runs smooth.

– disconnect all internet connections of your PC / Notebook
– type http://tplinkrepeater.net or http://192.168.0.254 – login with any password you want to setup
– follow the instructions within the TP Menu. Bingo. Thats it. No. Its not.

This didnt work for me as i found the Range Extender in my WiFi overview but it couldnt connect to my DSL internet router. So i couldnt move forward through the setup process. Without a connection to the WiFi you cant setup anything.

Happily i found the booklet #2 with Option #2 – step by step and you can connect the TP-Link RE650 AC2600 to your internet router. Just press the “WPS” button at the router and the big round button of the extender. Connected. Yeah. šŸ™‚

One last and important hint:
If you change the SSID / name of the range extender to the same name as your WiFi you wont find the TP-Link RE650 AC2600 anymore. You will get a disconnected error message as you need to connect to the name of your “old” Wifi network. The range extender extends it now 1:1.
